Limitations for Light and Heavy Ion Beams

Ulrich Ratzinger (Univ. Frankfurt)

The formation, acceleration and accumulation of ion beams differs a lot when compared to the case of electrons or protons. To achieve attractive beam parameters for collider physics some techniques, especially suited for ions have to be applied along the whole accelerator complex. The talk will briefly review the state of the art in high current ion source development. Low energy beam transport, injection into the linac, beam funnelling and beam injection into rings will be discussed as well as the measured beam parameters and the capabilities of the new GSI High Current Injector.
