After a brief introduction to the theory needed to understand both radiative and injected polarisation in electron storage rings and methods of optimisation, a short review of experience with various high and low energy rings will be given. The talk will then continue with recommendations for the planning of future rings and for directions of necessary future studies of spin dynamics.
